How did this song come about?
이 노래가 어떻게 탄생하게 되었나요?
Josh: The inspiration behind “still feel,” it was coming from a project I had been working on to write 50 songs in order to get better at song writing. Brett was helping me with the project. “Still feel” was number 11 of those 50 songs. During that time I felt very floaty because I had been losing roots in certain areas of my life where I felt like spiritually, physically, emotionally all of those things were shifting. I wrote it out of a place of feeling like, “how can I continue to have hope within the sense of being rootless”. Around that time, the 50 songs were being written, I had just broke up with my band that we had since high school and start of college. I had put a lot of my identity in the way that I work. Shifting all of that into a blank slate, felt like those roots detached. The song started as the 50 song challenge, but it progressed over the next year. It wasn’t until the next year when I was in Nepal, I was with my cousin, and the lyrics took a deeper dive into all those feelings I had been having and then expanding on those. That’s where the space metaphor came in. I no longer was doing the same things with music that I was before. I was also coming off of a spiritual journey with my church in India that was shaping a lot of belief and faith. Being physically exhausted because we were in Nepal, we were hiking in the Himalayas so my physical body was like, “I can’t do this anymore”. And not having my computer or anything to work on left me feeling very weightless, floaty.
Josh: “still feel”이 만들어진 배경은, 제가 작곡을 더 잘하기 위해 작업했던 50곡 작곡하기 프로젝트에서 나온 것입니다. Brett이 프로젝트를 도와주었어요. “Still feel”은 50곡 중 11위였습니다. 영적, 신체적, 감정적으로 모든 것들이 변화하고 있다고 느껴졌던 당시에는 삶의 일부에 자리잡은 뿌리를 잃어버렸기에, 저는 부유하고 있다는(floaty) 느낌을 받았습니다. “어떻게 하면 뿌리를 잃었다는 감각을 가지고도 희망을 지속할 수 있을까”라는 생각을 하게 되는 장소에서 이 곡을 썼습니다. 그 즈음 50곡이 작곡되고 있었는데, 저는 고등학생 때부터 대학 시절 초기에 걸쳐 활동했던 밴드에서 탈퇴했습니다. 저는 제가 일하는 방식에 제 정체성을 많이 담았었는데요. 그 모든 게 백지 상태가 되니까 뿌리가 떨어져 나간 것 같았습니다. 이 곡은 50곡 챌린지에서 시작되었지만 다음 해까지 계속되었습니다. 그때는 제가 사촌과 함께 네팔에 있었던 해였고, 가사는 이전에 느끼고 더욱 확장시켜 왔던 모든 감정을 더욱 깊게 파고들었습니다. 그래서 우주를 이용한 은유가 생긴 겁니다. 저는 더 이상 예전과 같은 음악을 하지 않았습니다. 저는 또한 인도의 교회를 포함하여 수많은 믿음과 신앙을 형성했던 영적 여정으로부터 벗어나고 있었습니다. 우린 네팔에 있었기에 체력이 고갈된 채로 히말라야 산을 등산하고 있었고 그래서 제 몸이 “더 이상은 못해”라고 말하는 것 같았습니다. 컴퓨터나 다른 작업 도구가 없는 게 제게는 매우 무게감이 없이 부유하는(floaty) 것처럼 느껴졌습니다.
What do you want people to take away from the song?

Brett: I think what our message is as a band, in general, with the idea of half alive is always sharing this narrative with these two polarizing feelings of things bringing you to deal and bringing you to life. So what I hear is like that last chorus where we’re talking about “I still feel alive, it ain’t hopeless, I start to notice” kind of thing. I think that song always brings me to that place of where we’re fighting for this narrative that there is always hope and that it’s always worth fighting for life and fighting for hope, kind of thing. I always think about that.
Brett: 저는 밴드로서 반쯤 살아 있다(half alive)는 아이디어에 기반하여 일반적으로 우리가 주는 메세지는 우리를 문제 상황에 데려가고 또 살아가게 하는 일들에서 촉발되는 두 개의 양극화된 감정에 대한 이야기를 공유하는 것이라고 생각합니다. 그래서 “나는 아직 살아 있고, 절망적이지 않으며, 비로소 깨닫기 시작한다”라고 말하는 마지막 코러스 같은 구절이 우리가 주는 메세지로 다가옵니다. 저는 이 노래가 저를 언제나 희망은 있고 언제나 삶과 희망을 위해 싸울 가치가 있다는 그런 이야기를 지키려는 투쟁의 장소로 이끈다고 생각합니다.
Was the video entirely taken as a one shot?

Josh: It’s made to look like a one shot but it’s actually five takes cut together and some of them are meant to look seamless. That’s the feel we were going for was a one shot look.

What was the creative process or idea that you had in mind for that video?

Josh: So originally the thing that we had planned was that it would be sort of 70’s themed with the costumes and just have a lot of dance in it and then it just slowly started coming together as we completed the song and just started thinking of how it could look…different color schemes, and then J’s brother, Jordan, choreographed the whole thing. They kind of formulated the whole dance portion and then we just had different friends of ours help on the costumes and the lights and the camerawork. Everything just kind of came together.

Josh: And with the half•alive project we were trying to incorporate as many artistic elements as possible, and to incorporate dance in a way where it doesn’t feel like it’s in the background. But just a part of what’s happening, in the foreground and part of the experience was really important to me. We were sort of trying to have dance be as integral of an element as say lights or amplification or anything else a band might need production wise to bring a show to life. And by no means are they back up dancers, they’re fully co-collaborators, and they’re almost part of the band in a way when we tour.
