You grew up in a small town. Just take us back and let us know how you got into music.

당신은 작은 도시에서 자랐다고 했죠. 다시 돌아가서 어떻게 음악을 시작하게 되었는지 알려주세요.

AJ: Just like you said I came from a really small town. It's called Belleville, Illinois. And in this small town, there's nothing to do. So which is cool because it forces you to have to be creative and to explore and do things. … there's a lot of other that comes with it like a lot of people were getting into drugs and a lot of people were having kids that were my age at the time and joining gangs. And there was a lot of that going around and I didn't want to be involved with this. So that's kind of where music came in for me. And it was a good way to escape.

AJ: 당신이 말했듯이 저는 정말 작은 도시 출신입니다. 바로 일리노이 주 벨빌입니다. 이 작은 도시에서는 할 일이 없어요. 그게 사람을 더욱 창의적으로 만들고 주위를 탐색하고 무언가를 하게 만들죠. … 그곳에서 많은 일을 경험할 수 있는데요, 많은 사람들이 마약을 했고 많은 사람들이 당시 내 나이에 아이를 가지기도 했고 또 범죄 조직에도 들어갔어요. 그 외에도 많은 일들이 벌어졌고 저는 그런 일들에 엮이고 싶지 않았습니다. 그래서 그곳이 제가 음악을 시작하게 된 장소가 되었어요. 즉 음악이 도피의 길이 되었습니다.

Tell us about the name of your full-length because I heard 'Skyview' holds a special place as far as your hometown.

'Skyview'가 당신의 고향만큼 특별한 장소라고 들었습니다. 앨범의 이름에 대해 설명해주세요.

AJ: Skyview is actually a drive-in movie theater in my hometown. And you know like I said it's a small town nothing to do. That was actually the place that I went like almost every week. I went there all the time and it was so motivating for me. I think just because it kind of took me out of the world of Belleville, it put me into a different world, it put me into skyview. when I was there and just watching the movies listening to the soundtracks behind these movies, it made me motivated to be like, I want my music to be in a movie, I want to hear my music out there. So that's kind of what inspired me with skyview, especially because skyview is in my hometown. And I really want people to know with this album, get to know who I am. And I think that starts with people knowing where I came from, because I think a lot of people don't really know.

AJ: Skyview는 사실 제 고향의 자동차 극장입니다. 제가 말했듯이 제 고향은 할 게 없는 작은 도시인데요. 그 극장은 제가 거의 매주 갔던 곳입니다. 자주 그곳에 갔고 많은 동기부여를 받았습니다. 그 극장이 저를 벨빌에서 벗어나게 하고 다른 세계로 데려다 주고 스카이뷰(skyview)로 올려다 주었기 때문이라고 생각합니다. 거기서 영화를 보고 영화 속의 사운드트랙을 들으며, 내 음악이 영화에서 흘러나왔으면 좋겠다는 의욕을 갖게 됐습니다. 그게 제가 Skyview에서 영감을 받은 이유이고 특히 Skyview가 제 고향에 있기 때문이라 하겠습니다. 그리고 이 앨범으로 사람들이 제가 누구인지 알기를 진심으로 바랍니다. 제 생각에는 많은 사람들이 제가 어디서 왔는지조차 모르기 때문에, 사람들이 제가 누구인지를 알기 위해서는 제가 어디서 왔는지를 먼저 알아야 한다고 생각합니다.

When you listen to the album, I want you to feel nostalgic. It really takes me home. At the same time, I want you to know more about who I am. Talking to the camera is unnatural for me. The best way for everybody to understand me is through my songs. I’m still just a kid who lives his life through music. There’s not a single day I don’t think about it or don’t want to run to my guitar, my piano, or my notepad and start writing.

당신이 이 앨범을 들을 때 향수를 느꼈으면 좋겠습니다. 앨범이 저를 정말로 고향으로 데려다 주거든요. 동시에 당신이 제가 누구인지에 대해 더 많이 알았으면 합니다. 카메라에 대고 말하는 것은 이상하게만 느껴집니다. 모든 이들이 저를 이해할 수 있는 최선의 방법이 바로 제 노래에 있습니다. 저는 여전히 음악을 통해 삶을 살아가는 아이일 뿐입니다. 단 하루도 음악을 생각하지 않은 날이 없고, 기타와 피아노와 메모장에 달려들어 곡 쓰기를 바라지 않은 날이 없습니다.
